Iodine is a blackish chemical element which is represented by the symbol I and has the Atomic Number of 53. It’s composed of 53 electrons/neutrons and belongs to the 17th group of the periodic table. You might not notice but Iodine is an important element in our lives because the human body needs a small amount of Iodine to maintain the chemical processes which is called metabolism. In medicine, Iodine is used as an antiseptic and for diagnosing and treating many different kinds of cancers.

Iodine was discovered by Bernard Courtois in 1811, he had created saltpeter by mixing seaweed ash with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and some day he added too much acid to the seaweed ash. He quickly noticed that a violet vapor escaped and created blue-black crystals.
